THE CHALLENGE
Air pollution is a major problem for public health. Outdoor air pollution kills 3.3 million people every year, mostly in cities. The problem is magnifying with the unprecedented population growth in cities. Our solution helps to mitigate air pollution by providing the cities with the insights of real time pollution data.
THE SOLUTION
Bettair is a very powerful, innovative and unique urban air monitoring system that is truly able to map air pollution in cities on a scale previously unimaginable. It is based on a large deployment of novel, affordable, and outstandingly accurate gas sensors that use an advanced post-processing algorithm. The information gathered by Bettair will allow cities to make smarter decisions to mitigate air pollution and create appropriate urban plans for enhancing air quality.
WHY FIWARE
The previous Bettair® platform was developed using a monolithic architecture. In that case, all the running services were deployed as a united solution. Such applications are easier to develop if they are not too big and scalability is achieved by running multiple instances of the application behind a network load balancer. However, such scalability is only possible in one dimension. Additionally, monolithic applications are difficult to understand and modify. As scalability is our main priority, a new approach was required.
With the addition of FIWARE, we designed the new platform using a micro-service architecture. In this architecture, some components are out-of-the-box FIWARE Generic Enablers. Because each service is absolutely independent of the others, they can be deployed independently.

BENEFITS
- The Platform: The platform is based on portable or fixed nodes which incorporate low cost gas sensors that are scalable, flexible and adaptable to any city.
- Advance Data Post-processing: Disruptive technology based on accurate low-cost gas sensors using advanced data post-processing techniques provides almost the same accuracy as traditional and more expensive equipment for a fraction of the price, thus allowing for the deployment of a large-scale and dense nodes grid.
- Custom Visualisation Tools: The Air Quality Index (AQI) is calculated using the air quality data collected by the nodes and presented with the latest GIS visualization tools, all of which is adaptable to the requirements of each city.
