THE CHALLENGE
Among all the different techniques to achieve Virtual Reality immersion, 360 video has a unique value to it. Unlike 3D model-based VR, it has the potential of giving a closer sense of “reality” to VR, as the source of it is normally a real camera capture as opposed to a 3D model. In addition, it is also, in many technical senses, more affordable to render since it relies on several existing technologies already in people’s hands and imposes lesser requirements to the rendering device. However, the effect of immersion is easily broken if the image perceived by the user is blurred. Unfortunately, this undesired effect is all too common today, mainly due to the inadequate distribution format being used. Optimizing 360 video delivery is therefore the prime focus of technologies the team at YBVR are creating.
THE SOLUTION
YBVR is a solution designed to optimize the distribution of quality VR video streaming for every device on any network. We are creating VR 360 video streaming technology optimized for any available bandwidth condition. Our aim is to become the pioneers of real-time VR video platform supporting massive live events such as sports and concerts.
WHY FIWARE
At YBVR, we are focusing our engineering efforts in developing technologies to create the engine powering the next generation of VR video experiences. At the same time, our business model is a B2B turnkey white-label solution, which necessarily implies to have a broad range of tools and enablers to make the usage experience as simple and seamless as possible for our customers. FIWARE enablers to us are the way to get access to proven, open tools that we can integrate in our solution with and that we can grow our business model upon.
Proven and open are two sides of the same coin: we like the fact that FIWARE enablers are open source, so we can have a full understanding of what’s happening, and that they are continuously supported by the open source community, and that the enablers themselves also leverage on strong open source components (e.g. MongoDB, OpenCV, GStreamer etc.). We at YBVR try as much as we can to stay away form ‘black box’ solutions, and in that aspect, FIWARE clearly has the right approach.
But licensing and commercial models also matter. We think FIWARE enablers have the right licensing framework around them to become quite friendly to be used to grow a business with them, which is not always true for some other alternatives out there. This legal certainty is also an important aspect to be considered, and in which we see FIWARE delivers.
USE CASE
Our first pilot of this architecture was in the FITUR event, where we demonstrated how the context broker information could be set up for consumption in a VR video context. Ever since that, we’ve continued to explore the possibilities of aggregating and consuming data, and we’ve found that dynamic information such as sports stats are also a quite suitable use case. This has obtained a quite positive feedback from our customers in the sports vertical, and thus is now becoming a part of our official white label app offering.
